Mention to someone that you are a Private Investigator, the fallacy is that he or she may imagine you snooping on husbands and wives. Contrary to this misconception, Private Investigators conduct investigations into both criminal and civil cases.
Although the meaning of a Private Investigator as provided in the Private Security Industry Act (Chapter 250A) is an individual who for reward carries out inter alia any of the following functions:-
a) Obtaining and giving information as to the location or recovery of lost or stolen property; or
b) Obtaining evidence to be used in any civil or criminal proceedings, private investigators are not provided with any powers of investigation or searches like other law enforcement agencies.
Despite this disadvantage and in the face of danger and all obstacles, Private Investigators are able to obtain the evidence needed by the Courts. Private Investigators act as amicus curiae (friend of the Court) and assist the Courts to obtain evidence to see justice done. PIs are indispensable not only to private enterprises but also to individuals. Again without the evidence obtained by PIs it would be an uphill task for Counsels to succeed in court trials. PIs can work alongside law enforcement agencies to complement them in the fight against crime.
